In subacute experiments, dexamethasone caused a reliable increase of quantitatively altered metaphases (aneuploid, polyploid). The maximum effect of dexamethasone is noted at 10-6 M concentration, when the number of aneuploid metaphases equals 4.0 .+-. 0.1%, polyploid metaphases 7.8 .+-. 1.4% (the control, respectively, being 1.0 and 1.0 .+-. 0.3%), and the total number of mutant metaphases amounts to 15.6 .+-. 2.66% (control: 3.0 .+-. 0.5%). In chronic experiments the number of polyploid cells totals 5.6 .+-. 2.46%. Hydrocortisone and prednisolone cause a slight increase of the number of metaphases.
