Three stages of meiosis (MI, AI and TI [metaphase I, anaphase I and telophase I, respectively]) of 2 tetraploid forms of winter rye in the 2nd generation were analyzed. 'Tetra-Omka' and 'tetra-Dolynska' do not differ in the level of meiotic irregularities. A wide variability in the level and the specificity of meiotic irregularities was observed in each population. A group of plants with relatively more regular meiotic MI and AI stages was observed in new tetraploid populations produced on a wide genetic basis. Selection of desirable plants may be based on the results of simplified variants of cytological analysis: at the MI, by counting the relative number of meiocytes with visible univalents (univalents lying outside the metaphase plate); at the AI, by counting the relative number of meiocyte with visible anomalies of lagging type, or chromosome disorientation, or others.
