Mean chiasma frequency at diakinesis was studied in 3 inbred lines of radish, LS-337/24, LS-337/25 and LS-43/51, their F1 hybrids and the population. The lines significantly differed among themselves and from the original population in this character. All lines showed a marked reduction in mean chiasma frequency compared to the population whereas the interlinear hybrids F1 were characterized by an increase of this mean which almost touched the population level. The breakdown and restoration of chromosome pairing were concomitant with the mating system of the species. A genotypic control of mean chiasma frequency was proposed in radish.
