Cyto genetics of tephrosia 1. the differential chromosome pairing in colchi ploid stock of tephrosia wallichii

Colchicinization in T. wallichii was achieved in 5 out of 64 treated seedlings. Among them 2 types of cyto-colchiploids were recognized, one showing lack of pairing or crossing over (desynaptic), and the other behaved like a normal autotetraploid, though quadrivalent frequency was very low. In Dec. 1977, 18 out of 20 pollen mother cells analyzed, showed complete lack of pairing (44I) in desynaptic cyto-colchiploids, whereas the other type had normal pairing leading to multivalent associations, bivalents and few univalents. In subsequent meiotic analysis in May and Aug. 1978, significant increase in pairing of chromosomes in desynaptic cyto-colchiploids was observed, whereas the other cyto-colchiploids behaved as before. Differential behavior of colchiploids at meiosis may be attributed to that the seeds used for colchicinization may be genetically not identical and desynaptic cyto-colchiploids may have been desynaptic even at diploid level, which may be genic rather than chromosomal in nature.
