Cyto kinins and apical dominance in solanum andigena lateral shoot growth and endogenous cyto kinin levels in the absence of roots

Outgrowth of lateral buds following decapitation of the main apex occurs in shoots of S. andigena which were without roots for up to 30 days prior to decapitation. Axillary shoots of 1-node potato cuttings were capable of growth in the absence of roots. The cytokinin content of de-rooted shoots was measured using both the soybean and tobacco callus assays and was maintained after at least 40 days of growth without roots. Apparently shoots may be capable of synthesizing cytokinin in the absence of roots. The implications for the involvement of cytokinins in apical dominance are discussed.
