Cyto kinins in podocarpus henkelii seeds 2. transport and metabolism of 8 carbon 14 labeled zeatin during seed germination

Cyto kinins in podocarpus henkelii seeds 2. transport and metabolism of 8 carbon 14 labeled zeatin during seed germination

Zeitschrift fuer Pflanzenphysiologie 108(5): 401-408

When 8[14C]zeatin was applied to the epimatium radioactivity was detected in the female gametophyte but not in the embryo sporophyte of P. henkelii seeds. Application to the female gametophyte did, however, result in movement into both the embryo sporophyte and epimatium. It appears that zeatin was transported between the epimatium and female gametophyte largely in the unmetabolized state. The rate of metabolism was faster in the female gametophyte than in the epimatium. Transport into the embryo sporophyte was slow and occurred mainly as metabolites of zeatin, some of which could apparently be reconverted to zeatin. Most of the metabolites formed were of polar nature. Two of them co-chromatographed with adenine and adenosine, which do not give a response with the soybean callus bioassay.
