Cyto photometric determination of the amount of dna in arachis section arachis leguminosae

The 2C amounts of DNA for 12 taxa of the section Arachis nom. nud. of the genus Arachis L. were determined using cytophotometric techniques [Series Annuae (A. batizocoi, A. spegazzinii, A. duranensis), series Perennes (A. villosa var. villosa, A. villosa var. correntina, A. cardenasii, A. chacoense, A. stenosperma), series Amphiploides (A. monticola, A. hypogaea ssp. hypogaea var. hypogaea, A. hypogaea ssp. fastigiata var. fastigiata, A. hypogaea ssp. fastigiata var. vulgaris)]. The diploid taxa ranged from 4.92-5.98 pg of DNA/cell. The species of the diploid series Annuae Krap et Greg. nom. nud. averaged approximately 1 pg less DNA/cell than the taxa of the diploid series Perennes Krap. et Greg. nom. nud. No significant differences were found between taxa within these 2 series. The tetraploid taxa ranged from 10.36-11.35 pg of DNA/cell. Within the tetraploid series, Amphiploides Krap et Greg. nom. nud., differences were found between A. monticola Krap. et Rig. and A. hypogaea L. The 2 sspp. A. hypogaea, A. h. ssp. hypogaea and A. h. ssp. fastigiata Waldron, differ significantly in their 2C amounts of DNA. The implications of the cytophotometric data on the chromosomal evolution of this section are discussed.
