Cyto taxonomic studies in the genus symphytum part 8 chromosome numbers and classification of 10 european species

Cyto taxonomic studies in the genus symphytum part 8 chromosome numbers and classification of 10 european species

Proceedings of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen Series C Biological and Medical Sciences 81(2): 162-172

Most species of the genus [S. anatolicum, S. asperum, S. bulbosum, S. circinale, S. ciscaucasicum, S. cordatum, S. grandiflorum, S. ibericum, S. officinale, S. ottomanum, S. orientale, S. peregrinum, S. tauricum, S. tuberosum ssp. nodosum and S. tuberosum ssp. tuberosum] showing most of the total variation share the basic number X = 12. This number should probably be regarded as the primary basic number from which the other numbers are derived. The extent of the X = 12 series points to an ancient origin of this number. Other basic numbers are found (X = 14, 15, 16) and probably a fourth (X = 10). That is as long as the hybrid nature of the plants with 2n = 40 cannot be proved.
