Cytological studies in carica spp and hybrids

Cytological behavior of 4 Carica spp. [C. cauliflora, C. monoica, C. quercifolia, C. goudotiana] 2 interspecific hybrids (C. monoica .times. C. cauliflora and C. cauliflora .times. C. papaya) and some important cultivars of C. papaya were studied. All the Carica species except C. quercifolia showed normal meiosis. Cytological studies in C. monoica .times. C. cauliflora showed various abnormalities like the presence of univalents, trivalents and quadrivalents at diakinesis and laggards during anaphase. However, the meiosis in C. cauliflora .times. C. papaya was normal indicating that differentiation between these 2 spp. are only at a cryptic structural level and that they have close relationship notwithstanding the undirectional nature of the cross. All cultivars of C. papayua except Pink Flesh Sweet showed normal meiosis. In this cultivar the meiosis was indicative of the existence of structural rearrangements such as reciprocal translocations of homologous pairs.
