Daily nutritional rhythm of the pike perch stizostedion lucioperca and the perch perca fluviatilis percidae in lake ladoga russian sfsr ussr

Voprosy Ikhtiologii 22(2): 224-232

The characteristics of the nutritional rhythm (NR) of the predatory fish S. lucioperca and P. fluviatilis were studied during the vegetative period. The daily ration of S. lucioperca increased from June (lowest ration due to fasting of adults during the reproductive period) to Sept. (highest ration). The main food components were Osmerus eperlanus, Coregonus albula, Acerina acerina and P. fluviatilis. The RN of S. lucioperca had a single peak in June-Aug. (early in the morning). In Sept. it had a 2nd peak in the evening. This type of rhythm was due to light as the pike perch has twilight vision, and to prey behavior (gathering at shoals in the morning and separating during the night). P. fluviatilis fed actively from June-Sept. consuming O. eperlanus, C. albula, A. acerina, Lota lota, Lampetra fluviatilis, Leptodora kindtii and P. fluviatilis (cannibalism was noted in this adult species). The highest consumption was observed in July and the lowest in Sept. Peaks were absent in its NR although it fed more intensely during twilight hours due to the behavior of prey. The lowest consumption was observed in the daytime due to formation of migrating schools of this species. Comparison of the daily rhythms of the 2 predators revealed distinct species specifics.
