Demethyl chlortetracycline bone labeling in studies of pheasant reproduction

To evaluate the potential contribution made by spring-released pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) to fall population levels via reproduction, an internal method for marking their offspring was needed. Of the various tetracyclines available, demethylchlortetracycline (DMCT) was selected for testing because of its low toxicity and stability in vivo. The results indicate that DMCT will not make a useful macroscopic marker for identification of pheasant progeny through treatment of the adult females, but they do not preclude the use of DMCT at lower dosage levels with microscopic techniques.
