Density and ecology of summer birds in the salt marsh on the west coast of schleswig holstein west germany

In 1973 on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein an inventory of summer birds was taken, i.e., summer breeders whose nests are inside the plot and those whose nests are outside the plot but whose territories touch it (neighbors), as well as the passing migrants and summer visitors. The plot, 56.9 ha, is divided into a Salicornia herbacea zone, 23.4 ha; salt marsh grazed upon by sheep and geese, 27.7 ha; and dikes, 5.8 ha. The inventory of the summer breeders whose nests are inside the plot proceeded according to the standardized mapping method (observing time 60 min/ha). Some monoplex components are discussed for the sky lark, oyster-catcher, kentish plover, redshenk, etc. Of the 19 spp. [Calidris alpina, Pluvialis squatarola, Larus ridibundus, Sturnus vulgaris, C. canutus, L. argentatus, L. canus, Arenaria interpres, Vanellus vanellus, Oenanthe oenanthe, Hirundo rustica, Charadrius hiaticula, Tadorna tadorna, Anas crecca, Tringa nebularia, Delichon urbica, Limosa limosa, Tringa erythropus and T. hypoleucos] of passage migrants, summer visitors and neighbors, 3 spp. dominated. By adding the number of summer breeders whose nests are inside the plot to the number of passage migrants, summer visitors and neighbors the density of the bird fauna is determined. In April, May and June, 30 spp. are represented with an average of 98.3 individuals/10 ha. According to previous investigations, the salt marsh areas have the greatest density of breeding pairs (40 pairs/10 ha), higher than non-bush areas of grass and meadow flowers in Schleswig-Holstein. Areas with large colonies can increase the density of breeding pairs considerably.
