Dermal epidermal interactions and the action of alleles at the agouti locus in the mouse 2. the viable yellow a v y and mottled agouti a m alleles

Mice which express the viable yellow (Avy) or mottled agouti (am) alleles at the agouti locus have varying coat color phenotypes. Viable yellow produces random phenotypes ranging from yellow to agouti, while mottled agouti animals may have coat color phenotypes ranging from agouti to nonagouti (black). To determine the site of action of these 2 alleles, various dermal-epidermal recombinations of viable yellow (Avy/Avy), mottled agouti (am/am), yellow (Ay/a) and nonagouti (a/a) embryonic skin were made. The Avy and am alleles act in both the dermal and the epidrmal components of the hair follicle. The role of dermal-epidermal interactions in the expression of agouti locus alleles is discussed.
