Solids upon which organic or inorganic cations were chemisorbed killed microorganisms [Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus] at a rate described by a 2nd order rate expression -dS/dt = K [surface area/ml][S], in which S = concentration of viable organisms/ml in an aqueous medium. Cations that have no antimicrobial activity in solution were capable of forming antimicrobial surfaces.
