Determination of electrolytes sodium potassium chloride and total proteins in the aqueous humor of rabbits under physiological conditions and after instillation of 5 percent adsorbonac and 2 percent pilocarpine either alone or in combination with or without soft therapeutic contact lenses with 40 percent and 70 percent absorption gradients experimental study

Bollettino di Oculistica 58(5-6): 325-332

The concentrations of Na, K, Cl ions and total proteins, in aqueous humor of rabbits, in physiologic conditions and after treatment with collyrium: adsorbonac (5%) and pilocarpine (2%), used both alone and together were studied by an automatic microdosage method. The concentrations were also studied adding the drugs to the application of therapeutic soft lenses with different hydrophilic precentages 40% and 70%, respectively. Adsorbonac causes a small increase in the concentrations of Na and a decrease in K, Cl and total proteins, in respect of control cases; adding the soft lenses the values decrease in respect of control cases. Pilocarpine 2%, used alone, causes an increase of Na and K, a decrease of Cl, while the values of total proteins remain unchanged. In conjunction with the corneal lenses at 40% there is no increase in the Na values, leaving the Cl unchanged, while the total proteins increase; with the lenses at 70% the total proteins and the values of K decrease. When using both eyedrops, adsorbonac and pilocarpine, an increase in the Na and the K and to a lesser degree in the Cl and the total proteins occurred. With the application of corneal lenses the values of K and total proteins considerably decrease with regards to Na and Cl, despite noticing a decrease the values remain superior to the control cases.
