Developmental changes in the inner surface structure of the stomach in pre natal and post natal rats

The developmental pattern of the inner surface structures of the fundic part of the stomach in prenatal and postnatal rats (Wistar strain) were examined in association with the formation of gastric pits and glands by scanning electron microscopy [SEM] and light microscopy. SEM observation revealed that the mucous ridges first appeared as many fine wrinkles at 17 days of gestation. Thereafter, these ridges tended to be split into many longitudinal ridges at 18 days of gestation. On each ridge, shallow constrictions appeared from place to place and increased in number, eventually subdividing the ridges into independent swellings at 19-20 days of gestation. The subdivided swellings of the ridges were progressively complicated in shape, appearing as well-defined, sandbag-like hillocks. These hillocks became slender and irregularly shaped, probably due to the numerical increase of hillocks at 21 days of gestation. The hillocks gradually lengthened and thickened and appeared to be gradually swollen and near each other in various manners at 22 days of gestation. After birth, these hillocks were oppressed and disappeared, leaving deep hollows here and there (10 days after birth). After the suckling period, the inner surface was flat and with many gastric pits. Each gastric pit was very wide as compared with that in neonates (40 days after birth). The light microscopic observations exhibited still were not distinguished at the time of the first appearance of the gastric pits. The gastric glands developed rapidly to accomplish their growth to a great degree .apprx. 3 days before birth. At 40 days after birth, each of these gastric gland cells had a structure almost similar to that in the adult.
