Diallel cross among 16 varieties of bread wheat triticum aestivum studies on yield and its components

Genetic and graphic analysis for 6 yield characters were studied. Observations were recorded on 10 random plants/plot for tiller number per plant, ear length, spikelets per spike, grains per ear, 1000 grain weight and grain yield per plant. The analysis of variance for combining ability and estimation of various effects was done following the technique of Griffing (1956), and genetic and graphic analyses were done by the procedures described by Jinks (1954) and Hayman (1954, 1958). The general combining ability [g.c.a.] variances were highly significant for all the characters. The estimates of specific combining ability [s.c.a.] variances were also highly significant for all the characters except number of tillers per plant for which level of significance was 5%. The estimates of g.c.a. variances were invariably greater than those of s.c.a. variances. The presence of epistatic gene action was observed for tiller number, ear length, spikelets per ear, grains per ear and grain yield, as the regression line differed significantly from unity slope. The absence of epistatic gene was observed for 1000 grain weight, and over dominance was expressed for grain yield per plant. The array points were widely scattered for all the characters, indicating genetic diversity among the parents.
