Differences in feeding behavior between actinia equina and actinia bermudensis actiniaria coelenterata with a note on intraspecific differences in feeding behavior in actinia equina

Differences in feeding behavior between actinia equina and actinia bermudensis actiniaria coelenterata with a note on intraspecific differences in feeding behavior in actinia equina

Zoologischer Anzeiger 212(5-6): 353-361

Individuals (15) of A. equina and 9 individuals of A. bermudensis were kept under the same conditions in 1 aquarium. Experiments were carried out with both species and the results were compared. Particles were applied to the tips of tentacles, Mytilus edulis meat particles as an example of a mechanical-chemical stimulus, filter paper particles as a continuous mechanical stimulus and a short mechanical stimulus was set by touching the tip of the tentacle with filter paper. During the transport of the filter paper particle to the oral disc a control phase was observed in A. equina during which the sea anemone is seeking for an adequate chemical stimulus; A. bermudensis controls the presence of an adequate chemical stimulus simultaneously with contact. The intraspecific differences in feeding behavior in A. equina were investigated. Correlations were found between the duration of particle transport to the peristomium and the beginning of the reaction of the mouth and on the other hand between mouth and tentacle when reaching the starting position again. The independence of various stages in feeding behavior as opposed to the relation between stages is discussed.
