Differences in the accumulation of gaseous and particulate fluorine compounds by forage vegetation and limed filter paper samplers
Differences in accumulation of gaseous and particulate fluorine compounds by forage vegetation and limed filter paper samples were studied under field conditions in the vicinity of an alumina reduction plant which changed its fluoride emission control system. Before the change-over, ambient measurements indicated 16% of the fluorides in the gaseous form and 84% as particulates with an estimated mass median aerodynamic diameter of about 0.8 .mu.m and a geometric SD .sigma.g = 5.3. The new scrubbing system emits considerably reduced amounts of particulate fluorine compounds. Forage vegetation accumulates particulate fluorides with an average efficiency of 0.25 .+-. 0.1, while the limed filter papers exhibit a much higher efficiency of 0.84 .+-. 0.15. The conversion factor between fluoride levels measured by limed filter papers and fluoride levels in forage vegetation can range from at least 7.4 .+-. 4 ppm .cntdot. dm2 .cntdot. day .cntdot. .mu.g-1 for particulate fluorides, up to 34 .+-. 3.6 for gaseous fluorides. The average fluoride accumulation coefficient of alfalfa and orchard grass was 2.4 .+-. 0.6 ppm .cntdot. m3 .mu.g-1 day -1 for gaseous fluorides. Average deposition velocities for gaseous fluorides were estimated to be 3.6 .+-. 0.6 mm s-1 for limed filter papers and 19 .+-. 5 mm s-1 for alfalfa. The corresponding deposition velocity related to the leaf surface area of alfalfa is 3.9 .+-. 1 mm s-1.
