Phosphate-activated glutaminase activity of mitochondria and synaptosomes isolated in ficoll-sucrose gradient from the cerebral hemisphere cortex in the female-rats aged 14, 21 days, and 1, 3, 12, 24 months was investigated in the medium with thyroxine (T4) or 3,3',5'-triiodothyronine (T3). A considerable growth of mitochondrial glutaminase activity induced by addition of T4 (in concentrations of 0.0125 and 0.05 .mu.mol/ml) and still greater increase of the activity by addition of similar concentrations of T3 during all age periods were found. The lowest degree of enzyme activation was observed in 14-day-old rats. Under the same conditions glutaminase activation of synaptosomes was much lower than that of mitochondria and did not depend on the type of hormones (T4 or T3) and their concentrations. In the experiments with rats aged 3 months a lower value of Vmax was found for glutaminase activity of synaptosomes as compared with mitochondria (under control conditions and with the addition of T4). Thus, certain differences in the degree and character of regulation of the glutamic acid formation from glutamine by thyroid hormones were determined in cellular structures, mitochondria and synaptosomes which differ in their differentiation program and functional specificity.
