Differences in the intake of roughage between cows of 3 breeds fed 2 levels of concentrates according to milk yield
Differences in the decrease of roughage intake as the result of an increased intake of concentrates between Holstein Friesian, Dutch Friesian and Dutch Red and White cows were studied with 12 animals of each breed between the 7th-14th wk of lactation. In each of the 2 mo. of the experiment (change-over design) the animals were offered 2 levels of concentrates: 1 or 2 kg for each 3 kg of milk (4% fat) produced in the 6th wk of lactation. The decreases in roughage intake for each supplementary kg DM [dry matter] of concentrates consumed were 664, 606 and 597 g DM for the Holstein Friesians, Dutch Friesians and Dutch Red and Whites, respectively. The between-breed differences were not significant.
