Differences in the structure of phaeophycean fucoidans can be correlated with their localization in the cell wall/
Fucans of various Phaeophyceae have different chemical or physico-chemical characteristics when they are extracted from isolated cell-walls, from the whole thalli, or from thalli of the same species after incomplete extraction. The polydispersity of fucans from the brown seaweeds, ranging from sulfate homofucans to sulfated xylogalacto-glucurono fucans (ascophyllans), corresponds to differences in location in the cell-wall. The ascophyllans are mainly found in the cell-wall sensu stricto and the fucoidans mainly in the intercellular spaces.
