Infectives of a Swedish strain of the insect parasitic nematode Neoaplectana carpocapsae Weiser were applied to test plots. Best results were obtained by dipping young seedlings in soil into a suspension of the infective stages of the nematode so that nematodes became trapped in the root systems of pine seedlings. Mortality among the nematode treated plants due to gnawing by adults of the large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis L., was significantly reduced to 21%, compared with 64% mortality among controls. Weevil larval populations were reduced by 89%. Spraying nematodes, with or without antidesiccants, was less effective in protecting seedlings.
