Differentiation between catalepsy induced by levo tetra hydro palmatine and catalepsy induced by haloperidol and morphine

By means of gel-permeable chromatography with Sephadex G-10 the brain DA [dopamine] and homovanillic acid (HVA) were isolated and then determined fluorospectrometrically. After i.p. l-tetrahydropalmatine (l-THP) 100 mg/kg in rats or i.v. 40 mg/kg in rabbits the HVA level in caudate nucleus was elevated significantly. l-THP stimulated the activities of caudate nucleus DA neurons. Rats were used in catalepsy experiment. l-THP (70 or 100 mg/kg, i.p.), morphine (20 or 30 mg/kg, i.p.) or haloperidol (0.13-1.0 mg/kg, o.p.) could, but d-THP (200 mg/kg, i.p.) could not, induce catalepsies. Haloperidol-induced catalepsy could be antagonized selectively by i.p. scopolamine 5 mg/kg, and morphine-induced catalepsy by i.p. naloxone 1 mg/kg. l-THP-induced catalepsy was potentiated by i.p. aminoxyacetic acid (AOAA 10 mg/kg), which is an inhibitor of GABA-transaminase. The l-THP-induced catalepsy may be related to the GABA-ergic system.
