Differentiation of local strains of xanthomonas malvacearum with the aid of cotton lines gossypium hirsutum and gossypium barbadense

Differentiation of local strains of xanthomonas malvacearum with the aid of cotton lines gossypium hirsutum and gossypium barbadense

Phytophylactica 8(1): 19-20

A study was conducted to find material available in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) for producing crops resistant to angular leaf spot, caused by X. malvacearum and to determine the relationship between the local strains and especially strains 1 and 2 of the USA. Knight's lines with a special B gene and 8 special lines recommended by Hunter were tested in various field tests in RSA. The 2 strains mentioned have been differentiated by bacteriophage lysis typing. A new variant of the bacterium may have been responsible for infection.
