Digestive enzymes and sub cellular localization of di saccharidases in some echinoderms
The specific activities of a number of enzymes of the digestive tracts of Holothuria forskali and Neopentadactyla mixta are presented. Disaccharidases of H. forskali, N. mixta, Echinus esculentus and Marthesterias glacialis are membrane bound, and may be liberated by detergent and are located in the brush border membrane. Dipeptidase activities were found in Pawsonia saxicola, M. glacialis and E. esculentus digestive tracts. Gut contents of H. forskali and P. saxicola and extracts of mucosal cells of the latter had proteolytic activity. Particularly in the case of H. forskali, it is uncertain whether this activity arises from the organism itself or from intestinal microorganisms.
