Dimensions of the testis and epididymis in young boars of certain breeds and their correlation with the data of the own performance test

Dimensions of the testis and epididymis were studied at the central performance station in young boars of four different breeds. Rearing conditions of three breeds (large white, Esthonian, Hungarian low land) were similar (individual), while those of Hungahib-39 were different (in groups, with large open yard). In both testes and epididymides, five dimensions were measured at the age of 180 .+-. 5 days (Fig. 1). The aim of the study was to find correlation between the dimensions of the testis, as well as epididymis and the data of the own performance test (STV: quantity of feed used for 1 kg of body mass gain, average daily body mass gain, average thickness of back fat). Owing to the different rearing conditions, the Hungahib-39 was behind the other breeds in all respects. No significant differences were found among the dimensions of the other three breeds, as well as between the identical data of the left and right sides (Table 1). The linear dimensions (Table 2) showed a positive correlation with the live body mass (r = 0.54), with the daily body mass gain (r = 0.55-0.58) and with the average thickness of back fat (r = 0.44-0.47). No significant correlation was found between the dimensions of testis, as well as epididymis and the calculated STV-points (Table 3a). It has been established that the STV data do not admit to estimate the dimensions of testis in the individual boars (Fig. 2). It is possible to consider the dimensions of testis and epididymis among the criteria of first service.
