Direct influence of stallion semen on progesterone production in cultured corpus luteum cells

Direct influence of stallion semen on progesterone production in cultured corpus luteum cells

Zentralblatt fuer Veterinaermedizin Reihe A 27(9-10): 788-795

Postovulatory and middle luteal phase corpora lutea of pig ovaries were cultured as monolayers with the addition of 3 different fractions of stallion semen. The semen was collected from an Anglo-Arab male and the entire ejaculate was separated into 3 fractions from consecutive parts of the reproductive tract. The 3rd fraction exerted a luteotropic effect on corpora lutea cells collected at the early and middle luteal phases of the cycle. The 3rd seminal fraction probably contained PG[prostaglandin]E The cells of both types of corpus luteum showed an increase of enzyme activity and of progesterone secretion.
