Direct radioimmunoassay of milk progesterone for detecting inseminated but non conceived and non return cows

An extensive study was performed on large numbers of cows at three large-scale farms to test the reliability of milk progesterone radioimmunoassay (RIA) for determning the reproductive status (pregnant, or non-pregnant) of cows. Pooled foremilk samples collected at the afternoon milking between days 21 and 24 after insemination were used for progesterone assay. The non-pregnant ("empty") stauts could be established with high probability (96.2-99.0%), while the diagnosis of pregnancy was less certain (53.3-68.2%). Oestrus that had passed unnoticed in the first cycle following unsuccessful insemination ("silent oestrus") could be detected by the method in 1.6-3.8% of the cows. Of cows that had not returned to oestrus until day 42 and had been considered non-pregnant (so-called "deceptively empty" cows), 11.6-15.2% were detected by this method. On the basis of several years' experience, the calving interval can be shortened by 4.03 days on the average by the use of the milk progesterone RIA.
