Dispersion in soil columns effect of boundary conditions and irreversible reactions

A closed form approximate analytical solution is provided which describes the transport of a solute in a soil column. The effects of convection, dispersion and adsorption are included. The latter can include both linear adsorption and 1st- or 0-order reactions. The effect of the finite length of a soil column on the miscible displacement [Miscible displacement experiments in soil columns of finite lengths can lead to a better understanding of the physical, chemical and microbiological processes that control solute dispersion in a soil.] of the solute is discussed in detail. The standard solution used in the past is apparently accurate to describe the breakthrough curve but not the profile within the column.
