Comparative structure and number of wrinkles in the palatine mucosa was studied in M. m. meridianus Pall. and M. m. nogaiorum Heptn. inhabiting the left and right banks of the Volga, Russian SFSR, USSR and differing with respect to a series of morphophysiological characteristics. In left-bank gerbils the number of wrinkles between the molars is greater than in right-bank gerbils; this may be connected with the differing degree of food processing in the mouth and food composition.
