Diversification of cytoplasmic genic male sterile lines in pearl millet

Four new male-sterile lines of pearl millet [Pennisetum, typhoides (Burm. f.) Stapf and C.E. Hubb.], 'PT 248/5A', 'PT 829/6A', 'PT 834/3A' and 'PT 888A', were developed by genome substitution in the cytoplasm of 'Tift 23A'. One of these, 'PT 248/5A', was free from downy mildew disease in all the 5 seasons in which it was tested. Six test crosses using these inbreds were superior to 'HB 3' in grain yield.
