Dynamics of endogenous auxins and abscisic acid in germinating pea seeds

The content of endogenous growth regulators in the process of pea seed germination was studied by paper chromatography combined with bioassays. On the background of high ABA content in dry seed, auxin was not detected. Six hours after the seeds begin to imbibe and swell, the reduced content of free ABA is accompanied by an increase in auxin activity which attains its maximal level in 48-h-old sprouts. At the same time the free form of the inhibitor does not change significantly, while the bound form increases only at the 24th h after seed germination. The changes in the 2 growth regulators at the time of germination substantiate the assumption that both auxins and abscisic acid take part in this process.
