Dynamics of heat resistance in the hydra hydra oligactis depending on short term temperature acclimation

The correlation between heat resistance and the temperature of the environment, which varied from 3-28.degree. C, was studied in 2 clones of hydra caught in a shallow pond near Leningrad, Russian SFSR, USSR, and differing in their agamic reproduction rate. Hydra were subjected to different temperatures for 24 h. Heat resistance of the hydras increased along with increased temperature, but the increase was not uniform at every interval of the temperature range. Heat resistance did not change in hydra of the 1st clone between 15-20.degree. C, nor in hydra of the 2nd clone between 20-23.5.degree. C, which indicates homeostasis of heat resistance in hydras. The interval of 15-21.degree. C was the most favorable and 24-28.degree. C least favorable for the agamic reproduction of hydras of the 1st clone. Agamic reproduction was most intense at temperatures of 19-28.degree. C in hydra of the 2nd clone. Studies of genetically homogeneous material facilitated the identification of the homeostatic zone.
