S. boops is one of the ranking lanternfish within the Benguela current region, off the Atlantic coasts of Namibia and South Africa. During the course of eight oceanographic cruises carried out in this area between 1979 and 1984, larvae of this species were frequently collected. This material is used to describe the larval development of S. boops between 3 and 14.4 mm and to discuss the distribution of the larvae.
