Economical effects of accustoming a program of immunization of calves against haemophilus somnus infections

In one agrarian combine an immunoprophylactic program against Haemophilus somnus infections, including a passive protection of newborn calves with an allogenic antiserum (Somnuserum) and active immunization of calves at the age of 4 and 6 weeks with a live vaccine (Somnuvac) was accustomed. The two biopreparates have been obtained by the authors. Losses of calves from 5 Oct. 1984 to 30 July 1985 in comparison to those in an analogical period of the former year decreased from 17.2% to 6.2%, and a total expenditure of calves decreased by 200 animals. Immunoprophylactic program increased a healthy state of animals, daily body weight gains increased by 20 g, and therefore one year increase of weight was by 5800 kg higher at identical costs of labor and feeding. Three months interruption of this program realization (from 1 July to 30 September 1985) revealed that H. somnus persisted in environment and that it was able to initiate a clinical form of the disease and cause losses in calves.
