Effect of aluminum citrate on electrokinetic potential on the surface of silicon dioxide and titanium dioxide particles

The electrophoretic mobility of SiO2 and TiO2 particles and the electrokinetic potential (Zeta potential) on their surfaces were measured. The effects of aluminium citrate and A1C13 on SiO2 and TiO2 were also examined. The results showed that both these particles were negatively charged, but the surface charge density of SiO2 was higher than TiO2. Moreover, it was interesting to note that as compared with TiO2, a certain amount of A1 could be firmly bound on the surface of SiO2, resulting in the decrease of Zeta potential on the surface of SiO2 particles. The present investigation supplied the experimental and theoretical evidence for further studies on the mechanism of the cytotoxicity of SiO2 and antagonistic effect of aluminium citrate and searching for therapeutic agents and preventive method for silicosis.
