Effect of application of sewage sludge 2. influence of sewage compost on the growth and nutrient absorption by sharinbai raphiolepis umbellata and tobera pittosporum tobira seedlings

The effect of sewage sludge compost as fertilizer for R. umbellata Makino and P. tobira Ait was examined. The fertilizing effect on the soils which were used for sugi [Cryptomeria japonica] seedlings was also examined. The effect of sewage sludge compost was evident in both species by adding 500-1000g/pot, but 500g/pot seemed sufficient. Growth of seedlings in those pots was better than in pots with 3g chemical fertilizer. For sharinbai, the effect of the soil which was mixed with sewage sludge, 3:1 or 2:1 in volume, was superior than that of the plots fertilized by chemical fertilizer, 3g/pot. For tobera, there were no differences in treatments. Absorption of N by seedlings was increased with sewage sludge compost, but that of P and K was not increased. Growth of seedlings did not seem to have any relation to the ratio of each nutrient.
