Changes in the species composition and the number of Lepidoptera and useful arthropods were studied in orchards in the Transcarpathian Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, USSR. Various protocols of chemical treatment were used. Thirty-six Lepidoptera spp., belonging to the following 11 families, were found in apple orchards: Tortricidae, Noctuidae, Lasiocampidae, Lymantriidae, Pieridae, Geometridae, Aegeridae, Lithocolletidae, Stigmellidae, Cemiostomidae, Iponomeutidae. The number of Lepidoptera decreased to 21 spp. in intensely treated orchards. Arthropods (149 spp.), belonging to 7 orders and 34 families were found. Significant changes (poorer species composition, changes in the number of various groups) were observed in the species composition and number of Lepidoptera and their natural enemies under the effect of chemical treatment. A reduction in the number of chemical treatments against codling moth contributed to the preservation of useful arthropods, activated them and significantly decreased environmental pollution.
