Effect of chloramphenicol and cycloheximide on cold resistance in plants and the activity of endogenous auxins and growth inhibitors

Changes in activities of endogenous auxins and growth inhibitors were studied in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and in meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis Huds.) exposed to nutrient media containing either chloramphenicol (CP), 250 mg/l, or cycloheximide (CH), 15 mg/l, for 1-2 days prior to cold hardening at 0 to 2.degree. for 4-5 days, or to keeping at optimal temperatures (20-25.degree.). Cold resistance in plants was evaluated by estimating the temperature at which 50% of leaf parenchyma cells died following a 40-min freezing, CH, after 24 hrs of action, inactivated free auxins, increased the activity of growth inhibitors in wheat exposed either to optimal or to hardening temperature, and caused a 90% inhibition of the hardiness process. CP, when applied for 24 hrs, slightly reduced the activity of endogenous auxins. A longer exposure of seedlings to CP (for up to 5 days) resulted in a stronger inactivation of auxins at optimal temperature and in a 30-35% inhibition of plant hardening at low temperature. Some possible causes of observed changes in the activity of endogenous auxins and growth inhibitors, and their relation to cold hardening are discussed.
