Effect of dietary protein and energy levels of growth on european eels anguilla anguilla

Effect of dietary protein and energy levels of growth on european eels anguilla anguilla

Boletim de Fisiologia Animal (Sao Paulo) 11: 95-100

The influence of the protein/energy ratio in a purified diet on the growth of large (40-120 g) European eels (Anguilla anguilla) was examined. The eels fed a diet with a low protein/energy ratio (58 mg/kcal or 68 mg/kcal) had a significantly lower (P < 0.05; t-test) body weight than those fed with a high protein/energy ratio (72 mg/kcal, 83 mg/kcal and 100 mg/kcal). Optimum growth was obtained on the 100 mg/kcal diet. Comparing the findings of this study with previous research on small European eels, it was concluded that large eels can achieve quite good growth when the protein/energy ratio is above 70 mg/kcal.
