Effect of different levels and sources of nitrogen on growth and yield of tomatoes lycopersicon esculentum

The effect of different levels and sources of N on growth and yield of 3 tomato cultivars, 'Punjab Chhuhara', 'Punjab Kesri' and 'Ostankinskij 121', was studied during 1977-1978 and 1978-1979. 'Punjab Chhuhara' produced (211.3 and 234.1 q[quintal]/ha) significantly higher marketable yield than 'Punjab Kesri' (196.2 and 221.7 q/ha) and 'Ostankinskij 121' (153.2 and 174.6 q/ha) during both years, [respectively]. The yield increased from 105.4 q/ha to 249.7 q/ha with the application of N from 0 to 200, kg N/ha, [respectively], and the response was almost linear up to 150 kg N/ha. Calcium ammonium nitrate proved superior to urea in terms of number of fruits, fruit weight, and fruit and seed yield.
