Abstract
A. variabilis (strain 458) is capable to photoautotrophic growth in the presence of DCMU [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, diuron] at concentration inhibiting photosynthetic activity by 80%. DCMU in the growing medium decreased the chlorophyll in the cells and increased the amount of phycobilin light-harvesting complex and carotenoids. The light stability of pigment apparatus in DCMU - modified cells increases and energy transfer from phycobilins to photosystem 2 is more efficient. Interrelationship of photosynthetic and respiratory processes in photoautotrophic growth is discussed.
