Effect of experimentally induced afla toxicosis on the performance of commercial broiler chicks

Effect of experimentally induced afla toxicosis on the performance of commercial broiler chicks

Indian Journal of Animal Sciences 52(6): 405-410

ISSN/ISBN: 0367-8318

The effect of dietary aflatoxin in commercial broiler chicks was examined with toxin doses of 0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 ppm for 0-3 wk (experiment 1), and 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50 ppm for 0-6 wk (experiment 2). Growth and feed consumption at 0.50 ppm, eviscerated yields at 0.25 ppm, feed efficiency at 1.25 ppm and livability at 1.00 ppm were adversely affected. With increased toxin, liver, kidney, spleen and pancreas showed increased weight, with respective threshold doses of 0.50, 0.75, 1.50 and 4.00 ppm, while bursa of Fabricius regressed at 1.25 ppm. Serum proteins decreased at 0.25 ppm, while liver lipids increased at 0.75 ppm, resulting in fatty livers. Neither the liver nor the thigh and breast muscle of birds were positive to aflatoxin or its fluorescent metabolites. The livability of chicks was significantly reduced with 4 and 6 ppm or 1 ppm of dietary aflatoxin when fed up to 3 or 6 wk, respectively.
