Effect of fertilizer nitrogen neem cake and the herbicide machete on the ammonia assimilating enzymes of azolla

Egyptian Journal of Microbiology 21(2): 163-170

Experiments were conducted to find out the influence of urea, neem cake and machete on the ammonia assimilating enzymes of Azolla under laboratory conditions. Azolla was grown in various levels of urea, neem cake and machete applied treatments. Ammonia assimilating enzymes of Azolla viz. glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (GOGAT) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) were estimated by withdrawing samples from the treatments. At higher levels of urea, the activity of GDH and GS were inhibited. Machete was found to suppress the activity of all three enzymes. Neem cake was found to increase the activity of GDH but decreased GOGAT activity at higher doses. No correlation was found between the levels of neem cake and GS activity.
