Effect of flavonoids on the development of experimental gastric dystrophies in mice

The capacity of 13 flavonoids to limit the extent of the stomach's alteration in reserpinized or immobilized mice and to prolong the relaxing effect of adrenaline [epinephrine] on isolated rabbit small intestinal segments was examined: apigenin (Hieracium pilosella); acacetin; linarin; pectolinarin (Cirsium oleraceum); scoparin (Sarothamnus scoparius); quercetin 3'-glycoside (Filipendula ulmaria); myricetin (Oxycoccus quadripetalus); gnaphaloside A (Ghaphalium uliginosum); patuletin; patulitrin (Anthemis tinctoria), pectolinarigenin (from pectolinarin); acetylpectolinarin (Linaria vulgaris); and phellavin (Phellodendron amurense). The activity of the sum of aglycones from the bark of Corylus avellana (consisting of quercetin, myricetin and kaempferol) and their rhamnosides were also studied. Myricetin, gnaphaloside A and the sum of aglycones were highly effective in preventing gastric alteration in the models used; these same compounds also caused a marked prolongation of the effect of adrenaline. The flavonoids are viewed as natural factors enhancing the gastric mucosa's resistance to injury.
