The effect of quercetin-3-D-triglucoside, rutin, quercetin-3-D-triglucosyl-p-coumarate (QGC), kaempferol-3-D-triglucoside (KG) and kaempferol-3-D-triglucosyl-p-coumarate (KGC) on electron transport and ATP synthesis in chloroplasts. The quercetin derivatives stimulated ferricyanide photoreduction and suppressed NADP+ reduction with and without the phosphorylation cofactors. The kaempferol derivatives stimulated the basal electron transport towards ferricyanide but had no effect on NADP+ reduction. Under conditions of phosphorylation, KG and KGC did not affect the rate of ferricyanide reduction but suppressed the electron transport to NADP+. All the compounds studied inhibited ATP synthesis with both electron acceptors. The effect of the kaempferol derivatives was twice weaker than that of analagous quercetin derivatives. The flavonol function in energy exchange processes in chloroplasts is related to the complexity of a compound's chemical structure. An expedience for bound flavonols to occur in the plant is discussed in terms of their involvement in primary processes of energy storage.
