Effect of fluchloralin oxadiazon and pendimethalin on soil microflora and nodulation in groundnut

Studies carried out during kharif, 1981, with fluchloralin, oxadiazon and pendimethalin for control of weeds in irrigated groundnut revealed that number and weight of nodules per plant were more in plots treated with herbicides at the recommended rates than control (no herbicide). The population of soil microbes (fungi, bacteria and actinomycetes) was considerably suppressed by fluchloralin 0.72 kg/ha, oxadiazon 0.5 kg/ha and pendimethalin 0.75 kg/ha up to 7 days from their application and showed recovery thereafter, touching almost the initial population level within 42 days of application of herbicides. Oxadiazon was more lethal to the soil microbes initially for a few days.
