Effect of fluoride mouthrinses on the extent of caries in animals

In a blind study the efficacy of 2 newly available 0.05% sodium fluoride mouthrinses was tested in rats fed a high sucrose diet and receiving no oral hygiene or other sources of fluoride. Both of these agents, when administered topically twice a day, reduced both the number of carious lesions and the extent of the lesions. Use of such rinses will be beneficial as part of a preventative dentistry program.
