Effect of foliar applications of systemic fungicides and late harvest on seed quality of dry bean phaseolus vulgaris

Dry bean (P. vulgaris cv. 'Tui') seeds were harvested at maturity and 1, 2, 3 or 4 wk after maturity (late harvest) from nonsprayed plants or plants sprayed with the systemic fungicides benomyl and oxycarboxin alone or in combination at 4 9-day intervals beginning 40 days after planting. The percentage seed germination in culture plates and field emergence decreased and the percentage of internally seedborne fungi increased with each harvest date for all treatments. The decrease in percentage germination and emergence and the increase in seedborne fungi was, in general, significantly less for seeds from fungicide-sprayed plants than the controls for the first 4 harvest dates. All seeds harvested after 4 wk were invaded nearly 100% by fungi.
